May 24,  · A Book of Voyages is a wonderful companion to Aubrey and Maturin and belongs in every happy library that has an O’Brian shelf. Candice Carty-Williams’ luminous debut is a joy-filled, painfully funny coming-of-age story set in modern Britain. Fabulous but flawed, defiant but vulnerable, Queenie Jenkins is one of the great fictional creations of the twenty-first century, and her story is, by turns, hilariously funny, dramatic and movingly tender. Lewis’s book is a thrilling aesthetic anthem to the complexity of race—a full embrace of its pleasure and horror, in equal parts. Judges Citation Robin Coste Lewis's Voyage of the Sable Venus is a meditation on the cultural depiction of the black female figure.
